Tyre Safety Tips

B Safe

Tyres are the only thing making contact with the road so it’s absolutely necessary to make sure that you make regular checks on your tyres for your safety, other drivers and pedestrians.

Do not mix tyres -
Only do this as a temporary fix, for example, using your spare wheel or a space saver. It is illegal in the UK and dangerous to mix different tyre types on the same axel.

Tyre Pressure -
Make sure you check your tyre pressure on a regular basis – the recommended tyre pressure for your vehicle can usually be found in your vehicle handbook.

Legal limits
The ¾ of the centre of the tyre must have no less then 1.6mm of tread but we recommend of optimum safety that you change your tyres at 2 – 3mm.

The 20p Tread Check - Check your tread bars – By using a 20p coin you can check your tread bar. The border on a 20p coin can give you an indication of whether you need to change your tyre. By placing it on a tread bar if the boarder is showing your tyre is well above legal limit, make sure you check it all around and on the inside and outside of the tyre as you can experience un-even wear. If part of the 20p border cannot be seen then you still have some tread left and are under the legal limit. Ok this is not the most scientific procedure but it does work, however if you’re un-sure and want a second opinion, a Bsmart mechanic will be more then happy to help and advise totally free of charge.
